Yankee Stadium Ready to Host First Fight!
June 4, 2010; Bronx, NY; USA; The canopy truss is assembled on the outfield of Yankee Stadium. Tomorrow night the Stadium will play host to the fight between Miguel Cotto and Yuri Foreman.
Tomorrow evening action will return to Yankee Stadium, but instead of the heroics of Derek Jeter, New Yorker’s will be cheering the sweet science, as
Miguel Cotto and
Yuri Foreman will square off in the first fight in the new
Yankee Stadium. Today was the weigh-in in the Great Hall, and fans poured in to catch a glimpse of the combatants.
Ticket sales are apparently brisk, and the Stadium will be set up to hold 30,000 fans for the fight. It should make for a historic evening in the Bronx. I arrived at the Stadium this morning at 10:30am to assist Top Rank photographer Chris Farina in hanging an overhead remote. He was told 11am setup. As you can see from the main picture and the one below, the ring was nowhere near ready. When I left after the weigh-in at 4pm, the canopy still had not been raised. I’m sure it’s a long night at the ballpark for the workers…
As for the weigh-in, fans crammed into the rather narrow Great Hall at Yankee Stadium to catch sight of the fighters. Miguel Cotto, in the role of challenger for this fight, stepped to the scales first and hit the mark at 153 1/2 lbs., while Super Welterweight Champion Yuri Foreman hit the limit at an even 154lbs. Both fighters look to be in great shape.

The obligatory staredown took place after the weighing, but it was standard fare, hopefully tomorrow night will live up to the type of action the Stadium deserves.

If you can’t make it to Yankee Stadium, be sure to catch it on HBO tomorrow night at 10:15pm Eastern. Surely for the host site alone it should make for a memorable evening.
