In October of 2012, I was assigned to shoot the Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado fight at the Home Depot Center by HBO Boxing. It was thought it would be a good action fight, and it surpassed those expectations, landing several nominations for the Fight of the Year, and should have been, in my opinion, a unanimous selection.
When I received the call from HBO a few months ago to shoot the rematch this past weekend in Las Vegas, I couldn’t help but be excited. While rematches of great fights rarely live up to the first, this one did that and more. It was a high action, hard fought bout that surprisingly, given the amount of hard shots, went the full 12 rounds. In a close fight, Mike Alvarado avenged his loss to Brandon Rios in October with a narrow decision win. Sign me up for a third Rios-Alvarado fight!
With the 10 year anniversary of the final Arturo Gatti vs Mickey Ward fight this year, and HBO producing a “Legendary Nights” documentary about the trilogy, it wouldn’t be shocking to see “Legendary Nights” Rios-Alvarado 10 years down the road…they’ve earned it so far.
If you haven’t seen the fight, do yourself a favor and catch a replay on HBO, also make sure to follow HBO’s Instagram feed for behind the scenes images from each fight, as well as their Twitter feed it’s a pretty cool fan experience.
