Fight of the Year: Brandon Rios & Mike Alvarado Go to War!

BACK AND FORTH — October 13, 2012; Carson, CA; USA; Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (white trunks) and Mike Alvarado (blue trunks) trade punches during their 10 round fight at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. Ed Mulholland/HBO

I shot the much anticipated HBO Boxing after Dark card this past Saturday night in Carson, CA, and to say it lived up to expectations would be an understatement. In the main event, Nonito Donaire was impressive stopping Toshiaki Nishioka in the 10th round, but the real story was the co-feature between Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios and Mike Alvarado, which in all likelihood gave us 2012’s Fight of the Year.

November 26, 2011; Mexico City, Mexico; Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (r) and Kermit Cintron (l) weigh-in for their 12 round bout at the Plaza de Toros Bullring in Mexico City. Photo: Ed Mulholland/HBO

Flew into Mexico City on Thanksgiving Day to cover the upcoming Saul Alvarez-Kermit Cintron fight for HBO. Yesterday was just a travel day, but today the work began as I headed to Plaza de Toros, the world’s largest bullring, to cover the weigh-in for the fight. The fight will also take place in the Plaza de Toros bullring, and it gave me a chance to bust out my new Canon 8-15mm lens for a test.

November 19, 2011; Houston, TX; USA; Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (gold trunks) nails Peter Manfredo (white trunks) with a right hand during their 12 round bout at the Reliant Arena. Photo: Ed Mulholland/HBO

Shot the Julio Cesar Chavez JrPeter Manfredo fight for HBO at the Reliant Arena in Houston, TX last night, and it was quite a fight while it lasted. Whatever you think about Chavez Jr’s talent, one thing can be said, he makes for entertaining action fights, and that’s why Mexican fans have flocked to him. On this night in Houston, he didn’t disappoint, stopping a game Manfredo in the fifth round.

Sometimes the Action (or lack of) Doesn’t Help Anyone…

October 22, 2011; New York, NY; USA; Nonito Donaire (r) won a lopsided unanimous decision against previously unbeaten Omar Narvaez at Madison Square Garden. The fight was a tough one to shoot, as Narvaez seemed to be looking only to survive and had his hands glued to his head. Photo: Ed Mulholland/HBO

If an opponent comes into the ring looking only to survive, it can be virtually impossible to knock him out, or look good in any manner. Budding superstar Nonito Donaire learned that the hard way tonight en route to a less than scintillating 12 round unanimous decision over Omar Narvaez at the Wamu Theater at Madision Square Garden.

It’s also virtually impossible to make a compelling image when one fighter has his hands glued to his head the entire night, I was once again reminded of that.

Filipino Flash Returns; Donaire-Narvaez Weigh-In

October 21, 2011; New York, NY; USA; Nonito Donaire finally gets back into the ring after a long layoff due to promotional problems to face Omar Narvaez tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden. Both fighters look fit and ready. Photo: Ed Mulholland/HBO

On February 19, 2011, Nonito Donaire landed a single shot separating Fernando Montiel from his senses and sent the boxing world reeling with talk of the next great superstar, a successor to Manny Pacquiao. Fast forward 8 months later and Donaire is finally returning to the ring after promotional issues that forced a couple of fight cancellations. He’ll enter the ring tonight looking to capitalize on what he started in February, and see if he can once again capture boxing’s imagination. I shot the weigh-in yesterday afternoon for HBO, and both Donaire and opponent Narvaez look ready to go.

Alvarez, Broner Shine in Guadalajara!

June 18, 2011; Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico; Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (r) took a big step, dominating Ryan Rhodes and stopping him in the 12th round at Arena VFG in Guadalajara. The bout was my latest assignment for HBO. Photo: Ed Mulholland/HBO

Little late on the update after a few issues in Guadalajara (lost iPhone and such), but all in all a pretty good trip to Mexico, and a good night for “Canelo” Alvarez and Adrien Broner. Who were both pretty impressive.

June 4, 2011; Los Angeles, CA; USA; The legendary Julio Cesar Chavez leads his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to the ring for his WBC Middleweight Championship bout against Sebastian Zbik. Chavez Jr. captured the championship via majority decision in the same city his father won his first championship in 1984. Photo: Ed Mulholland/HBO

Well my recent traveling road show found me in Los Angeles this weekend covering Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, in his first title bout against WBC Middleweight Champion Sebastian Zbik at the Staples Center. Back in 1984, his legendary father Julio Cesar Chavez captured his first title in Los Angeles, and his son took his first step towards building his own story, capturing the WBC Middleweight belt in a close, hard fought 12 round majority decision.
